About the ChompSaw Kid-Safe Cardboard Cutting Tool with Hole Punch and Scoring Tool, Blue
The ChompSaw is a tabletop power tool from Chompshop that lets kids cut cardboard without scissors or box cutters. Instead of an exposed blade, a small cutting head inside a metal safety guard moves up and down at high speed, nibbling tiny pieces out of the cardboard as it is pushed through. Chompshop says it will not cut fingers or catch hair or clothes. Kids feed the cardboard by hand to cut straight lines, curves and slots for forts, costumes, models and school projects, and the scraps collect in a pull-out dust drawer.
Chompshop recommends the ChompSaw for ages 3 and up and says it has been independently tested to toy safety standards including ASTM F963 and CPSIA. It is designed for cardboard up to about 3mm thick (roughly two pennies stacked) and may also cut thinner, softer materials such as felt, fabric and craft foam. It must not be used on metal.
The ChompSaw plugs into a standard 100-120V wall outlet, and its power supply stores under the lid. It runs at about 70-75 decibels, similar to a household vacuum, so Chompshop suggests ear protection for children who are sensitive to noise. It measures about 10 x 10 x 4 inches and weighs 5.5 lbs.
In the box: the ChompSaw with cutting head, dust drawer and cutting mat, the power supply, a hole punch for making holes and starting cuts in the middle of a sheet, and a scoring tool for making folds. The box itself is printed with a first project, and Chompshop's online Learning Hub has free project ideas and video tutorials. No app or account is needed. The ChompSaw comes with a one-year warranty, and replacement cutting heads are available.
What reviewers say
GearDiary, Make: and TTPM all found that the ChompSaw cuts cardboard easily while keeping fingers away from the cutting head. In GearDiary's test, kids aged 7 and 10 picked it up without help; the reviewer said it "cuts cardboard like butter" and liked the built-in cord storage and scrap drawer. Make: took a sample to a library, where 4-year-olds with parents nearby mastered straight cuts and moved on to curves, and praised the solid build, chunky on/off switch and well-designed hand tools. The common complaints are noise and mess: GearDiary suggests headphones for noise-sensitive kids, Make: had to shake out cardboard dust around the cutting head, and TTPM says the drawer needs emptying at least every 30 minutes. TTPM also notes a learning curve for the youngest kids and rates it for ages 5+ with adult supervision.
Pros
- Fingers can't reach the cutting mechanism, so kids can cut on their own
- Cuts straight lines and curves in cardboard easily
- Kids from preschool age to 10 learned it quickly in reviewers' tests
- Built-in cord storage and a pull-out scrap drawer
- Hole punch and scoring tool included
Cons
- Loud when running (about 70-75 dB)
- Cardboard dust still needs cleaning up, and the drawer needs emptying often
- Learning curve for the youngest kids to find the right feeding speed (TTPM)
- Can slide on the table when cutting extra-thick cardboard (Make:)
