About the Pokémon Pikachu Puppetronic by RealFX, 16-Inch Interactive Plush Puppet
Pikachu Puppetronic by RealFX is a 16-inch Pikachu that works as a hand puppet with built-in electronics. You put your hand inside Pikachu's back, where buttons and levers control its features, and your hand movements trigger sounds and actions: the mouth moves, the eyes blink, the ears move in two directions and the cheeks light up. Jazwares says there are more than 120 sounds and actions in all.
Touch sensors on Pikachu's head, nose and tummy set off more reactions, including electric attacks with battle sound effects. Reviewers note that more sounds and features turn up the more it is played with, and that the controls take a little practice to learn.
It is an officially licensed Pokémon product, sold in the US by Jazwares and developed with Wow! Stuff, the company behind RealFX puppets. Jazwares recommends it for ages 8 and up, and it also appeals to older Pokémon fans and collectors. Because it has a firm internal frame for the mechanics, it is less soft and squishy than a regular plush.
In the box: the Pikachu Puppetronic and a size adjuster piece, packed in a collectible showcase box that doubles as a display stand. It needs 3 AAA batteries, which are not included, and Pikachu has to come out of the display packaging to fit them. Unboxing is fiddly, so an adult may want to help. No app is required.
What reviewers say
The Toy Insider says the sound effects and interactive features keep kids entertained and that puppeteering is an immersive way to play with the character, but cautions that the large size and hard internal body make it less cuddly than a standard plush and that younger kids may need help mastering the controls. The Independent's IndyBest guide named it the best Pokémon gift for 10-year-olds: its young tester soon had Pikachu blinking, wiggling its ears and lighting its cheeks, and unlocked more sounds the more he played, though the box was overly complicated to open. Owner reviews at a major US retailer average about 4.1 out of 5 from 37 ratings, praising the look, movements and sounds; complaints include batteries not being included, having to take Pikachu fully out of the display to fit them, and one buyer who expected more animatronic movement.
