About the The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Hatchin' Yoshi Interactive Egg and Figure
Hatchin' Yoshi is an interactive egg and Yoshi figure from Spin Master, made for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Yoshi starts out inside an egg. To begin the hatch, you remove the tabs and tap, knock on and rock the egg. When Yoshi is ready, the egg starts rocking side to side on its own and making noises, then cracks open as Yoshi pops out with a "Yoshi!" You then peel away the shell pieces and keep the bottom half of the egg as a display stand. The hatch happens once; the egg does not reseal.
Out of the egg, Yoshi measures about 5.9 inches tall, 4.25 inches wide and 5.75 inches long. Pat his nose or head and his eyes light up while he reacts with sounds and rocks his head side to side, and his whole body rocks when he is excited. Press down on his shell and speak to him to hear him respond; after a while he ends the conversation with an "aww."
Spin Master recommends it for ages 4 and up. It suits younger Mario fans who enjoy a surprise reveal, as well as Nintendo collectors who want a display piece.
In the box: one Hatchin' Yoshi egg with Yoshi inside, an instruction sheet and a quick start guide. Batteries are included; retail listings specify 3 AA batteries. No app is required.
What reviewers say
Owner reviews are strongly positive: about 4.6 out of 5 from over 2,000 ratings at one major US retailer and 4.8 out of 5 from 28 at another. Parents and grandparents say watching the egg rock and crack open on its own is the highlight, with kids filming the hatch and loving that Yoshi talks back; several call it sturdy and well made and a good gift for Mario fans and collectors. The main criticisms: it is a one-time hatch, the excitement wore off quickly for some kids, and one parent found Yoshi less interactive than the videos suggested. A few owners said Yoshi got stuck and had to be helped out of the egg, and some mention the volume and shell durability.
