About the Sony PlayStation Portal Remote Player for PS5, Midnight Black
PlayStation Portal is a handheld remote player for PlayStation 5. It streams games from your PS5 over Wi-Fi to an 8-inch, 1080p LCD touchscreen, with full DualSense-style controls built in, so you can keep playing in another room while someone else uses the TV. This is the Midnight Black version, with an all-black finish.
It is not a standalone console and does not store or run games itself. Remote Play needs a PS5 console that is connected to broadband internet, powered on or in Rest Mode and paired with the Portal, plus a PlayStation Network account. Sony requires Wi-Fi of at least 5Mbps and recommends 15Mbps or faster; picture quality depends on your network. It plays compatible PS5 games and some PS4 games installed on your console at up to 1080p and 60fps, depending on the game and network. VR games and games that need peripherals other than a DualSense or DUALSHOCK 4 controller are not supported.
With a PlayStation Plus Premium membership (sold separately, renews automatically), Cloud Streaming lets you play games from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog and Classics Catalog, plus select digital games you own, without your PS5 being on. Haptic feedback and adaptive triggers work in supported games, and the touchscreen stands in for the DualSense touchpad.
Sound comes through built-in stereo speakers, a 3.5mm headset jack or PlayStation Link wireless audio devices such as the PULSE Explore earbuds and PULSE Elite headset; Bluetooth audio is not supported. The built-in 4,370mAh battery charges over USB-C in about 2.5 hours from a PS5's USB-C port. The Portal weighs about 529 g (18.7 oz).
In the box: PlayStation Portal remote player, USB cable and printed materials.
What reviewers say
Launch reviews were split. IGN (8/10) went in skeptical and came away calling it the best way to use PS5 Remote Play, praising the bright, vivid 8-inch LCD, a light, comfortable build with full DualSense features, easy one-time setup and solid streaming on good home Wi-Fi; it measured about 4.5 hours of battery at full brightness. PCMag (2.5/5) liked the DualSense-based controls and found input lag low on home Wi-Fi, but felt the device was too limited for what it does, judged its LCD less vivid than OLED screens, and noted that a phone with a clip-on controller can handle Remote Play too. Both criticized the lack of Bluetooth audio, and IGN found the built-in speakers weak and saw resolution drops when the Wi-Fi signal was poor.
Pros
- Bright, vivid 8-inch screen that beats Remote Play on a phone (IGN)
- Full DualSense controls, including haptics and adaptive triggers (IGN, PCMag)
- Light and comfortable to hold for long sessions (IGN)
- Simple one-time setup and responsive streaming on strong home Wi-Fi (IGN, PCMag)
- Lets you keep playing PS5 games while the TV is in use (IGN)
Cons
- Needs a PS5 to do anything; it is not a standalone handheld
- No Bluetooth audio; wireless audio needs PlayStation Link devices (IGN, PCMag)
- Weak built-in speakers (IGN)
- Picture quality drops on weak or congested Wi-Fi (IGN)
- LCD is less vivid than OLED phone and handheld screens (PCMag)
- A phone with a controller can also do PS5 Remote Play (PCMag)
