About the Nintendo Switch Lite Handheld Console, Turquoise
Nintendo Switch Lite is a compact, lightweight version of Nintendo Switch designed for handheld play only. This listing is the Turquoise color. The controls are built into the system, including a cross-shaped +Control Pad, around a 5.5-inch 1280 x 720 capacitive touchscreen.
Switch Lite plays Nintendo Switch games that support handheld mode, on physical game cards or as digital downloads from Nintendo eShop. Games that don't support handheld mode can be played by pairing separately sold wireless controllers such as Joy-Con or a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. It cannot connect to a TV, its controls don't detach and it has no built-in rumble. It does not play games made for Nintendo Switch 2.
It has 32GB of internal storage (part of it reserved for the system) and a microSD card slot that takes microSDHC and microSDXC cards up to 2TB (sold separately). Wireless features include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1 and NFC for amiibo. Online play requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership (sold separately).
Nintendo rates the built-in 3570mAh battery at about 3 to 7 hours depending on the game (about 4 hours of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild), and it charges in about 3 hours in sleep mode through the USB-C port. The system weighs about 0.61 lb and measures about 3.6 x 8.2 x 0.55 inches. It has stereo speakers and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
In the box: Nintendo Switch Lite system (Turquoise) and Nintendo Switch AC adapter.
What reviewers say
IGN (8.3/10) and CNET (8.1/10) both rate the Switch Lite as an excellent dedicated handheld. IGN found it lighter and better built than the original Switch, with a lovely 720p LCD that looks slightly sharper at the smaller size, more tactile face buttons and a much better D-pad for platformers. CNET agreed it feels sturdier, praised the D-pad and said every game it tried looked good on the 5.5-inch screen. Both stress the trade-offs: it can't connect to a TV, the controls don't detach and there is no rumble, which makes local multiplayer and some motion-heavy or Joy-Con-based games awkward without extra controllers. IGN also noted the modest 32GB of storage, speakers that can make the body buzz at high volume and the risk of stick drift in built-in sticks, while CNET called battery life just OK. Both reviews date from 2019-2020 and tested other colors.
Pros
- Light, compact and better built than the original Switch (IGN, CNET)
- Sharp 5.5-inch 720p screen; games look good at the smaller size
- Cross-shaped D-pad is great for platformers and puzzle games
- Face buttons feel more tactile than standard Joy-Con (IGN)
- Plays the large Nintendo Switch library on the go
Cons
- No TV output or detachable controllers, so local multiplayer needs extra controllers
- No rumble, and motion-control games are awkward on a fixed handheld
- Battery life is only OK, at about 3 to 7 hours (CNET, IGN)
- Only 32GB of built-in storage (IGN)
- Built-in sticks can't be swapped out if stick drift develops (IGN, CNET)
- Speakers can make the body vibrate at high volume (IGN)
