About the Nex Playground Active Play System for Kids and Families
Nex Playground is a compact motion-play console that connects to a TV over HDMI and turns your body into the controller. A wide-angle camera and Nex's AI-powered motion engine track players in real time, so games are played by jumping, dancing, swinging and dodging instead of holding a gamepad. The small remote is only used to move through menus. Depending on the game, up to four people can play at once without extra controllers. Nex says motion tracking is processed on the device and no video is stored or processed in the cloud, and a magnetic privacy cover fits over the camera when it is not in use.
Five games come free in the Starter Pack: Fruit Ninja, Whack-a-Mole Deluxe, Party Fowl, Go Keeper and Starri. The rest of the catalog, which Nex lists at 60+ games including Bluey, Barbie, NFL FLAG, Sesame Street and PAC-MAN titles, needs a Play Pass. Play Pass is sold separately as a 3-month or 12-month plan, covers up to two Nex Playground consoles in the same household, and has no ads or in-game purchases. New games are added each month.
Nex recommends it for ages 5 and up; 3- and 4-year-olds can join in with an adult or older sibling. You need a TV with an HDMI input, a Wi-Fi connection and a smartphone to set up a Nex account, plus a clear play area of about 6 x 6 feet. Nex recommends placing the console 15 to 60 inches high, centered with the TV screen. Once games are downloaded, they can be played offline.
In the box: Nex Playground console with magnetic camera privacy cover, remote control with 2 AAA batteries, HDMI cable and power supply.
What reviewers say
TechRadar and Tom's Guide both found the Nex Playground a fun, easy way to get families moving. TechRadar, after more than a year with it, praised the straightforward setup and how well the games use the ultra-wide camera and motion engine, calling the camera control top-notch, and saw it as a good fit for young children, older adults and light fitness. Tom's Guide's tester, who used it for a month with a six-year-old, liked the simple setup with no app, the child-sized remote and the magnetic lens cap, and said branded games such as Bluey and Barbie Dance Party were the biggest hits. Both flagged the Play Pass: only five games are included and the rest of the library needs the subscription. TechRadar also found the games lighter on depth and visuals than mainstream consoles, with frame-rate dips in some busy games.
