About the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller
The Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller is Nintendo's own full-size wireless controller for Nintendo Switch 2, made for comfortable play when the console is docked to a TV or set up in tabletop mode. It is only for use with the Nintendo Switch 2 system; it does not work with the original Nintendo Switch, Switch OLED or Switch Lite.
It keeps the familiar Pro Controller layout, with offset analog sticks, large A/B/X/Y buttons, a plus-shaped D-pad and L/R/ZL/ZR shoulder buttons, and adds features made for Switch 2. Two GL/GR buttons on the back of the grips can be set to copy other buttons from the console's HOME button menu, and the settings are saved per game. A C Button opens GameChat; GameChat requires an internet connection, a Nintendo Account and a Nintendo Switch Online membership (sold separately). A 4-pole 3.5mm audio jack lets you plug in wired headphones or a headset. HD Rumble 2, motion controls (accelerometer and gyroscope), a Capture Button and built-in amiibo (NFC) support are also included; amiibo are sold separately.
The controller connects wirelessly over Bluetooth and can also be played wired over USB. Nintendo rates its built-in 1,070mAh lithium-ion battery at about 40 hours per charge, with a full recharge in about 3.5 hours using the Nintendo Switch 2 AC adapter or the included cable. It weighs approximately 235g (about 8.3 oz).
In the box: Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller and USB-C charging cable.
What reviewers say
Reviewers agree it is the best way to play Switch 2 docked. IGN (8/10) called its analog sticks some of the best it has used, praised the well-placed GL/GR back buttons and the roughly 40-hour battery, and found it far more comfortable than the Joy-Con 2 in their grip. PCMag gave it an Editors' Choice (4.5/5), highlighting smooth, near-silent sticks, the headset jack and per-game back-button mapping, with battery life in line with Nintendo's claim. Tom's Guide and CNET liked the improved D-pad and the comfortable matte finish. Common criticisms: no Hall effect sticks, which leaves long-term stick drift an open question; digital rather than analog ZL/ZR triggers, a drawback in racing games; only two back buttons; grips that are small for big hands (IGN); no official PC support at review time; and less reason to upgrade if you already own the original Pro Controller.
Pros
- Smooth, precise analog sticks that reviewers rank among the best on any controller (IGN, PCMag)
- Programmable GL/GR back buttons that are easy to reach and saved per game
- Around 40 hours of battery life, borne out in testing (IGN, PCMag, Tom's Guide)
- Much more comfortable for docked play than Joy-Con 2 in the grip
- Improved D-pad and a built-in 3.5mm headset jack
- Responsive in both wired and wireless play (Tom's Guide)
Cons
- Sticks don't use Hall effect sensors, so long-term stick drift is unknown
- Digital ZL/ZR triggers instead of analog, a limit in racing and shooting games
- Only two back buttons, and they can't be swapped or reshaped (CNET)
- Grips are small for larger hands (IGN)
- No official PC support; reviewers needed workarounds (IGN, PCMag)
- Less of an upgrade if you already own the original Pro Controller (CNET, IGN)
